WHAT IS STEMGIRLS CLUB?

Businesses will have the opportunity to promote STEM careers before students make A level choices which will enable them to take STEM courses at University. The opportunity for regular contact will enable businesses to influence skills gained at school that will ensure success in these subjects. Businesses can also influence what gets delivered at the STEM girls Club e.g. coding or other skills that current graduates lack. The effect of this will be that more students will take STEM subjects at A level thus providing more female apprentices, graduates and increase the number of girls in STEM careers, again reducing the gender gap and increasing equality in the workplace.

The programme structure and benefits for your Business

FOR COMPANIES THIS WILL CONSIST OF:

1. FIRST PICK of STEM motivated, high achieving 16-18 year old female students for apprenticeship positions in your company

2. OPPORTUNITY TO INFLUENCE what is being delivered in the STEM Girls club e.g. can suggest coding workshops, design activities etc, to ensure you’re hiring appropriate candidates for your positions.

3. STUDENTS CAN APPLY TO DO WORK EXPERIENCE OR GRADUATE SCHEMES, Summer Workshops etc with the company or deferred placements for after university.

4. PROMOTE AND MARKET YOUR COMPANY, by providing access to your buildings, role models and insight into the company beliefs and values – thus creating a loyalty early on with the potential apprentices.

Monies donated will go towards impacting on more girls, bringing higher tech resources to the clubs and cover costs of resourcing these incredible clubs

If you are or know of any women currently working in STEM industry we would love to hear your story. Sharing how you fought against the odds and pursued a career in STEM could be all a young teenage girl needs to realise her own potential. Visiting us in person, having a skype call or participating in one of our events brings the idea that much closer to a reality. Your voice is powerful and we would love to hear it.

If you would like to host a STEMgirls Club event like our STEM launch, Roadshow or Celebration of Achievement event. We would love to use your facilities and we would organise all the rest! Having events in STEM industries brings the girls one step closer to following a career in STEM.

STEM girls club: Providing the missing link between school and university

Amy Ryman is the founder of STEMgirls Club, a business that provides opportunities for girls to explore STEM careers through weekly engaging and fun challenges. As the Head of Science at a South London comprehensive, Amy became aware that few girls were choosing to pursue extra-curricular STEM activities in comparison to boys. To help address this, she created STEMgirls Club and began a fruitful collaboration with King’s, working with students to engage girls in STEM topics in the classroom.

Partnership with Kings College London

We are so excited to announce that this year STEM Girls Club will be working in partnership with Kings College London.

Schools will have the opportunity to welcome KCL undergraduates to their club, where they will work with students on a project of their choice; anything from development of vaccines, to new technologies for visually or audio impaired people.

The collaboration will last 8-10 weeks and will finish with a University visit to KCL to present their findings to lecturers at KCL in a real life university lecture theater.

The impact on our nations students being out of the school environment these past few months is still unknown. But what is clear is COVID-19 has shown us all the huge role STEM professionals have on keeping the country and it’s people safe.

CIO+1 Event

This Tuesday I was asked by Claire Priestly to open her CIO+1 event. The event was specifically looking at challenging the lack of diversity in STEM and the "leaky pipeline". As STEM Girls Club's approach is to start at the source it made sense to start with me.

When considering how to approach this presentation due to the fact that although I am well used to speaking in front of many people as a teacher, it is unusual for the people in front of me to be already well into the careers.

I decided to start with Why;

2018 is the Year of the Engineer and also the year that a turn across the globe has been felt in terms of gender equality in all industries.

SKY News approached STEM girls this week to document the incredible work being done by female students at Harris Academy Crystal Palace. Where scientist Dr Elizabeth Pollitzer has demonstrated that the lack of females in STEM roles is affecting scientific research. SKY wanted to show the good work happening in STEM Girls clubs across South London bucking the trend that STEM isn't for Girls.

As the end of my school journey as Head of Science begins to come to an end I am about to embark on a new journey as Director of STEMgirls Club. Its all coming together now, with the marketing and design aspects complete and the schools for the pilot all ready to go in September. This Summer will be spent seeking out the best STEM companies to use in September and creating the challenges for the club.

STEM Speed Dating Roadshow at Wimbledon High

On Tuesday 14th November schools from across the South of England who have been involved in the STEMgirls club this term will take part in the STEMgirls Speed dating Roadshow. Inspiring female representatives from all vanities of the STEM field coming together to being grilled by our aspiring STEM girls on advice, tips on how to overcome barriers and networking opportunities.

One Chance Approach

The headlines from this years exam results all had one thing to say "The boys were back in town." That for the first time since the GCSEs were introduced, boys out did the girls. Now this isn't because this cohort of girls weren't as able as the boys this year, but the shift from modular to linear courses.
